The Ritland Project
The recently discovered Ritland Crater of western Norway is mapped in
detail through a 3 year programme financed by the Norwegian Research
Council. In addition the mechanisms of Ritland crater formation, syn-
and post impact sedimentation and ejecta distribution are being
analysed based on detailed field samples, laboratory analysis and
numerical modelling.
Melt alteration and mineral formation
In this programme we are experimentally analysing and geochemically
modelling the alteration of impact glass. This study is focusing on the
mechanisms of dissolution and formation of alteration products, in
particular clay minerals. The similarities between these newly formed
minerals and the ones described from planetary surfaces are striking.
